Robb Montgomery is the author of two textbooks: Smartphone Video Storytelling and A Field Guide for Mobile Journalism. His documentary films have won top prizes at film festivals in Hollywood, Moscow and Berlin.
Montgomery teaches mobile journalism seminars at journalism schools like the Scripps School at Ohio University, Stockholm University, American University Cairo, and the EFJ school of journalism in France.
He is the chair for the Mobile Journalism Awards and the director of the Smart Film School.
Based in Berlin, Montgomery leads mobile journalism and mobile filmmaking training in over 30 countries: online and in person.
He is a former editor for the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times and his online certificate training courses are used by reporters at CNN, WAN-IFRA, Mediacorp, BBC, Journalism Co UK, The New York Times, BILD, Russ Media, 24Sata, VRT public television, TV8, RTL, TVN, the United Nations, and Reuters.
In 2011 he developed the mobile journalism training program for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty broadcast reporters and has trained more than 20,000 storytellers in smartphone video production methods with Smart Film School certificate courses.
He was named the Ashoka Storyteller in Residence for 2015.
He holds a b.a. in Journalism (1990 – Eastern Illinois University).
